Conference Goals:

This Hedberg Research Conference is being organized by AAPG and GSTT to convene those geologists and geophysicists worldwide who are working in basins characterized by mobile shales. Scientists from various disciplines, including geology, geophysics, reservoir and drilling engineering, are invited to participate in this conference to discuss state-of-the-art concepts, methodologies, case histories, and the future direction of research in mobile shale systems.


The meeting will be comprised of three days of oral and poster presentations and a one-day optional field trip. Oral presentations will be 30 minutes in length, with discussion by all attendees following each presentation. To optimize the discussion, the number of speakers will be limited to 100 individuals. General attendance is limited. The poster sessions will be linked to the oral presentations. The results of the conference will be published in a compendium research volume.


Processes and Architecture of Mobil Shale Basins.  Mobile shale basins are found worldwide as well as on other planets.  We will examine the structural and stratigraphic framework, evolutionary history and the nature of shales in these settings.  Comparative discussion will be held on the impact of shale versus salt tectonics in basin formation and evolution.  In addition, we will examine the association of intrusive versus extrusive events with the processes active in these basins.

Imaging of Mobile Shale Basins.  The dynamic and varied nature of mobile shales creates a challenging environment for geophysical imaging of and drill penetration through mobile shale units in a variety of important hydrocarbon basins around the world.   Little documentation exists of the gravity, density, velocity and general seismic nature of mobile shales.  New techniques in subsalt imaging may prove applicable for enhancing our ability to image in these complex shale basins.   Techniques for interpreting shales and their relationship to surrounding strata should be examined.

Fluids and Pressure Regime in Mobile Shales.  Fluids play a critical role in the development of mobile shales.  Shales have the capacity to act as source rock, reservoir, sealing facies, migration pathways and impact diagenesis through thermal blanketing of deeper units.  We will examine the development, nature and role that overpressure plays in these basins, as well as examine maturation modeling, fluid migration pathways and the role that fluids play in shale mobilization.

Exploration and Development in Mobile Shale Basins.  Mobile shales play a key role in many of the largest hydrocarbon basins in the world.  The impact that these shales have on all aspects of the hydrocarbon systems will be examined for many key basins, as well as the affect of mobile shales on drilling and development.  Relationships between gas hydrate and shallow mobile shales will also be discussed.
